Epic journey fraught with early rising, peril optional

Today we woke at the crack of dawn, but dawn does not want to crack that early. The goal was to head from San Jose to Tortugero and get here at a reasonable hour. This meant that the alarm was set for 5 am in anticipation of two busses and a boat trip.

We headed off and caught our first bus which wended through the highlands. Lots of twisty turney roads.  The gentle rocking of the bus promptly lulled me to sleep. The promised three hour bus ride took less than two hours.  We then trudged across town to the other bus station and hopped a bus to the coast. Initially I was sitting in our bags and then standing, able to watch as we drove through the banana plantations, but eventually ended up sitting next to a young girl who was eager to point out points of interest including a river otter and some bananas heading across the road.

We then took a boat through the canals to Torteguero. It is not turtle season so it is less trafficked than at some points of the year. Still, the waters were busy.

The boat took about an hour since it was the public transport. It stopped a couple times along the way, including a stop to pick up a woman who dropped an impressive number of f-bombs. Chris and I were sitting in front which is definitely the splash zone.

This picture is deceptive since we got pretty wet. At any rate, we reached Tortugero and made our way with some assistance to the Tortugero Natural Hotel. It is lovely and cheap with comfortable beds, our own bathroom, a lovely veranda, and the sound of the waves.

We did a bit of wandering including looking for food. We are on the Caribbean so the food is tasty and spicy.

It you want some real estate it is available. You may need to provide your own walkway.

The town is walkable. In fact, there are no cars. It is slightly muddy today since it is raining off and on, but the sun keeps coming back.

We walked along the shore and got our feet wet in the Caribbean Sea. The sun came out and people emerged up and down the coast.

We headed back to take a nap and then grabbed some food and drink accompanied by lizards.

We then sat on the veranda with some drinks and listened to the rain and the surf.
